Europe must unite to solve migration problem

DZIQ 990 AMA smuggler’s boat crammed with hundreds of people overturned off Libya’s coast as rescuers approached, causing what could be the Mediterranean’s deadliest known migrant tragedy and intensifying pressure on the European Union Sunday to finally meet demands for decisive action. Italian Premier Matteo Renzi said his authorities were “not in a position to confirm or verify” how many were on board when the boat set out from Libya. Eighteen ships joined the rescue effort, but only 28 survivors and 24 bodies had been pulled from the water by nightfall. With yesterday’s tragedy, demands for decisive action were going mainstream as authorities from France, Spain, Germany and Britain joined calls for a unified response.

“Europe can do more and Europe must do more,” said Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament. “It is a shame and a confession of failure how many countries run away from responsibility and how little money we provide for rescue missions.” French President Francois Hollande told French TV Sunday, “Europe must mobilize more ships, more overflights by aircraft.”  Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy told a political rally, “Words won’t do anymore.”

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the latest tragedy is an urgent reminder “of the critical need for a robust search and rescue capacity in the Mediterranean. It has become “the world’s deadliest route used by asylum seekers and migrants.” Even Pope Francis, speaking in St. Peter’s Square yesterday spoke out. “There are fears there could be hundreds of dead. The international community must act decisively and promptly to prevent similar tragedies”.

Royal News: Prince William might miss his second royal child being born to attend an engagement with his grandmother Queen Elizabeth. But he said, he would do everything he can to attend a First World War commemoration at the Cenotaph in London on Saturday, despite it being the due date of his baby to enter the world. It is 100 years since the ill-fated Gallipoli landings in Turkey and the prince will join the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh for the moving service. It leaves Kate facing the possibility of giving birth alone when she goes into labour and has to travel to St Mary’s Hospital in London’s Paddington. A spokesman for Prince William said, “The Duke’s intention is to be at the commemorations. Being the 100th anniversary it is very important to him.”

Congratulations to my good friend in London, United Kingdom, Miss Justyna Sadowska for winning the Oscars trophy as “Best Supporting Heart Of House Host 2014”.

Have a lovely week dear ones. See you again on Wednesday, same time, same station.
