DZIQ 990 AM– Belgian couple Sir Roger Degreef and wife Lady Marie-Josée Verbelen of Vilvoorde, Belgium initiated a fund raising activities for the Kabayan Project in the Philippines to support the children of Kabayan Elementary School, a public school in Kabayan Barrio, Benguet Province that does not get the necessary funds from the country’s Department of Education due to budgetary reasons. In a speech delivered by Sir Degreef before the Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Victoria Bataclan and other guests, he reiterated that teachers and principal have to buy themselves the most school materials and pay for the maintenance of the school. They also have to charge the parents for school fees.

With the collected money, every child of the school received a packet of school materials, an average cost-price of 7.60 Euro. To combat malnutrition, a feeding program was also started. Once a month, a wholesome hot meal with soup, rice with chicken and pork, a soft drink and a biscuit for dessert with an average cost-price of 8 Euro has been distributed to the children. An opening ceremony was organized in the presence of some barangay officials before the distribution of the gifts and meals.

The project is supported by the Knights and Ladies of Rizal Brussels Chapter and private individuals in Belgium & other parts of Europe.
